Eligibility & Making Changes

Eligibility & Making Changes

Eligibility

If you’re a full-time Canada employee working 30 hours or more per week, you and your eligible dependents may enroll in benefits. Coverage will begin on the first day of the month following your date of hire. Temporary and contract employees are not eligible for benefits.

Eligible dependents means:

  • Your spouse, legal, or common-law.
  • Your unmarried children under age 21, or under age 25 if they are full-time students.
  • Children under age 21 are not covered if they are working more than 30 hours a week, unless they are full-time students.
  • Children who are incapable of supporting themselves because of a physical or mental disorder are covered without age limit if the disorder begins before they turn 21, or while they are students under 25, and the disorder has been continuous since that time.

Making Changes

The choices you make when you first become eligible stay in effect unless you experience a life change. Once you are enrolled, you must wait until you have a qualified change in family status to make changes to your coverage.

Examples include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Birth or adoption of a first child by the plan member.
  • The plan member’s marriage (legal or common-law).
  • Plan member’s divorce or end of a common-law relationship.
  • Death of a plan member’s spouse.
  • Death of the plan member’s only insurable child.
  • Plan member’s spouse losing benefits coverage elsewhere.
  • Plan member no longer having any dependents eligible for dependent coverage.

If you do not inform us of your change within 31 days, we’ll consider the plan member’s dependents to be late applicants and you must complete Evidence of insurability and be approved for coverage for Canada Life before being allowed to join the plan. If approved, the coverage will be effective on the date of approval If you experience a change in status, please contact askpnc@wilburellis.com for forms and additional information.
